Abstract
It has been rare that the non-neoplastic thymic cysts produce signs and symptoms without a sufficient size and proper location. They are rare in adults and a few cases were reported in infants and children. Thymic cysts due to syphilis have rarely been. described during the present century. But most of the early reports stated about the relation of syphilis and thymic cysts.
The mass in the case reported here measured 7. 5 X 6 X 5cm. and produced no symptoms except mild dizziness. About 15 days before admission, a mediastinal mass was found in routine chest x-ray examination. The cyst arising in the anterior mediastinum and located in front of the aorta was round shape and irregular but smooth outer surface. It was filled with bloody dark red, turbid fluid. Microscopically the lining epithelium of the cyst was low cuboidal and the thymic tissue elements were either immediately adjacent to this epithelial lining or separated from it by collagenous fibrous connective tissue of varing thickness. Hassall¢¥s corpuscles were present and some of them were calcified. There were also scattered foci of cholesterol clefts surrounded by foreign body giant cells.
The purpose of this report is to review the literature concerning thymic cysts and to report a case.
